Scandinavians chose the resort because of the thrill of testing unfamiliar ski runs.
Tourists from the icy Scandinavian countries throng in the Bulgarian ski runs in Borovets (southwestern Bulgaria) for the winter
season. Although they can ski in their own country, the Finns prefer Bulgaria because of the good conditions, the low prices and the thrill of skiing on unfamiliar ski runs, explained ski teachers.
But Scandinavians, Englishmen and Dutchmen also frequently visit Bulgaria on ski tourism. Lately, Russian tourists have returned to the resort.
"Borovets is full to the brim with tourists, all the hotels are full," said Neli Sandalska, President of Balkantourist Agency. "The conditions in the resort are perfect. We have invested four million levs (1euro = 1.95 levs) on maintenance of the ski runs and the infrastructure in the resort. We intend to invest another 60 million levs in the next years," added Sandalska.
In 2006 alone 20 million levs will be invested in a new gondola
lift and new artificial snow guns.
